Make Your Computer a Wee Bit Faster

Posted in: Computer Tips & Tricks

Yes, yes. We’ve been over defragging, clearing out your temporary internet files and running anti-spyware programs. If you’re taking good care of your Windows XP computer but would love to see it run a bit faster still, gather ’round and listen closely.

Windows XP uses something called a “prefetch system” to organize and preload information for many of the programs and files you use regularly. Knowing that, you won’t be surprised as I tell you that there’s a folder called “prefetch” sitting right there on your very own computer that’s used specifically for this prefetch system.

Over time, that prefetch folder has a tendency to fill up - way up! It’s likely that yours contains references to programs and files that you no longer use or have. So, all of you who’ve jumped to the conclusion that I’m going to recommend cleaning out that prefetch folder every now and then are absolutely correct.

Here’s how. Click on My Computer, then click on your C drive, then click on the Windows folder, and finally click on the prefetch folder. Once you’re in the prefetch folder, click the “View” navigation item at the top of the window and select “Arrange Icons by > Type”. That should move the files around and organize them a bit. Now all you have to do is look through the files and delete any .PF files that are older than a week or so.

Fireant.tv

Fireant.tv is your directory for video blogs (also known as vlogs) and podcasts on the internet. Browse through their channels, watch video blogs on technology, sports, music or whatever your interests may be.

The component of the FireAnt website that sets it apart from many of its competitors is the easy-to-use viewer which allows you to “watch all types of content without having to worry about which format it is (Quicktime, Windows Media, Real, Flash, MP3, etc.).”

Pretty sweet.

Perhaps You Can Buy It Cheaper…

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks

This week I was ordering flowers from OrganicBouquet.com (my favorite florist of all-time) when I came upon the checkout page. I noticed a section that said something along the lines of “Enter Coupon Code here if you have one.” I didn’t have one … but I sure wanted one. So I went over to Google, typed in “Organic Bouquet Coupon” … and presto!

The first link took me to a page with a coupon code that I copied and pasted into my checkout page back at OrganicBouquet.com, and I immediately received 10 percent off my order.

I tried this on the other three online purchases I’ve made since then - going first to Google and typing in the name of the store I’m buying from along with the word “coupon” … and I keep finding these great coupon codes that drop a nice chunk of change from my final price.

Though I can’t guarantee this technique will always work for every site, I’d say it’s absolutely worth a shot each time you buy something online.

Artist, Elephant, or Preschooler?

Posted in: Website Links

This silly bit is just for fun and nothing more, so try it when you’re hoping to pass a minute or two of your time.

Go ahead and test your artistic instincts by viewing a series of six paintings. Some were painted by a contemporary or abstract American artist, some were painted by an elephant residing in the Alberta zoo and some were painted by an American preschooler.

Can you guess which artist painted each painting? I sure didn’t do so well, much to my dismay. Here’s the link: http://tinyurl.com/q9wp3.

Actually Talk to a Human (Not Just a Recorded Voice)

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks, Website Links

This week I was introduced to the wonderful www.gethuman.com. The gethuman project is “a consumer movement to improve the quality of phone support in the U.S.”

Gethuman.com site provides information that allows you to talk to real people, really quick, whether you’re booking a reservation with United Airlines, trying to resolve an issue with your Capital One credit card, or hoping to speak with an agent at Comcast because your internet connection is down.

The site offers contact secrets you can try with any company, a database of “secret phone numbers and codes,” company ratings and online community discussions. It’s updated regularly; the project works hard to ensure that information doesn’t become stale or outdated.

Today I’m sharing a nifty little website that’s sure to help all you festive folk put together a perfect Halloween costume. Mosey on over to www.costumzee.com and browse through thousands of costume ideas, search by keyword or check out the most popular ideas by category.

Costumzee acts as a community and shopping portal, so you’re encouraged (but by no means required) to share photos of your great costumes, help others with your comments and feedback, buy accessories and costume parts directly from the site and sign up for the Costumzee newsletter.

It’s definitely a fun little site to poke around, if only for a few minutes. And for those in need of a bit of inspiration this Halloween, it’s an absolute gem.
