Internet/Email Tip of the Week: Be Wary!
Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks
After having my ad in the Summit Daily Classifieds for three or so days, I received an e-mail titled “interested.” The e-mail came from a Mr. Curt Gardner, and went a little something like this: GoodDay sir/Mrs. I am interested in purchasing your “item” and i will appreciate viewing the picture if you have it………..i will arang for the shippment my self……. Please kindly get back to me if is still available…..I will be willing to make the payment by a certified bank check will be ok…..If this is alright with you. Look forward to read from your reply. My Regard..curt
I was bummed. I couldn’t believe that people were actually scavenging e-mail addresses from the Summit Daily website and trying to scam people out of money. Let this act as a warning; if you ever receive an e-mail even vaguely similar to the one from Mr. Curt Gardner here: DELETE it immediately; PLEASE do not take it seriously.
Here are some of the clues that told me this was a bogus e-mail:
- Extremely poor English
- E-mail address beneath the signature was different than the reply address.
- Offered to pay me by certified bank check
- Offered to make special shipping arrangements himself
- N ever specified which furniture piece he wanted - this guy only said he was interested in purchasing my “item.” (Just for my own kicks, I e-mailed him back and asked him which item he was interested in … he then asked me to send photos of everything I was selling - *then* he could tell me what he wanted.)
Be careful. I received three different e-mails like this during the 10 days my e-mail address was listed in the Summit Daily classifieds.
