Block Annoying Emails

Posted in: Computer Tips & Tricks, Email

Does cousin Ronny send you nothing but lewd jokes every day? Did your ex-boyfriend not understand your “Please never e-mail me again” request? Not to worry. Outlook Express actually allows you to block e-mails from specific e-mail addresses.

To block an e-mail address, first click on a message in your Inbox that was sent from that address. Next, click on the Message menu at the top of the page. Scroll down, then click on Block Sender. Congratulations, you just instantly added the sender’s e-mail address to your Blocked Senders list!

If you’d ever like to view or edit your Blocked Senders list, click on the Tools menu at the top of the page, then Message Rules, then Blocked Senders List.

Internet/Email Tip of the Week: Be Wary!

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks

After having my ad in the Summit Daily Classifieds for three or so days, I received an e-mail titled “interested.” The e-mail came from a Mr. Curt Gardner, and went a little something like this: GoodDay sir/Mrs. I am interested in purchasing your “item” and i will appreciate viewing the picture if you have it………..i will arang for the shippment my self……. Please kindly get back to me if is still available…..I will be willing to make the payment by a certified bank check will be ok…..If this is alright with you. Look forward to read from your reply. My Regard..curt
I was bummed. I couldn’t believe that people were actually scavenging e-mail addresses from the Summit Daily website and trying to scam people out of money. Let this act as a warning; if you ever receive an e-mail even vaguely similar to the one from Mr. Curt Gardner here: DELETE it immediately; PLEASE do not take it seriously.

Here are some of the clues that told me this was a bogus e-mail:

  • Extremely poor English
  • E-mail address beneath the signature was different than the reply address.
  • Offered to pay me by certified bank check
  • Offered to make special shipping arrangements himself
  • N ever specified which furniture piece he wanted - this guy only said he was interested in purchasing my “item.” (Just for my own kicks, I e-mailed him back and asked him which item he was interested in … he then asked me to send photos of everything I was selling - *then* he could tell me what he wanted.)

Be careful. I received three different e-mails like this during the 10 days my e-mail address was listed in the Summit Daily classifieds.

Get Word to Stop Helping You

Posted in: Software Downloads and Tips

If Microsoft Word drives you crazy when it tries to guess and finish your words as you type, then put an end to the annoying “help” attempts!

Go to Tools at the top of the screen, then AutoCorrect. Make sure the check box for “AutoFormat as You Type” is empty, then clear the check boxes for the AutoCorrect items you’d like to disable. Lastly, go to the AutoText Tab and make sure the Show AutoComplete tip check box is empty.

That should do it!

Quick Searching on the Web

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks

Want to know the fastest way to do a search on the Internet? It’s Ctrl + E.

The Ctrl + E shortcut works no matter what webpage you’re on; holding these two keys down together will immediately move your cursor to a new Search Box that pops open on the left of your screen.

If you have a Search Toolbar installed (such as the Google Toolbar), your cursor will jump right into it when you hit Ctrl + E. Both easy and fast, this is definitely a quick shortcut worth remembering.

Site of the Week: Webshots

Posted in: Website Links

Webshots is a fun, easy-to-use website for a wide variety of Internet users of all ages. In a nutshell, it’s a great photo-sharing website.

Webshots allows you to download photos (depicting just about every and any subject matter) to your desktop or cell phone, share photos online via public or private photo albums, and order film-quality prints and customized gifts of your own digital photos.

In the past, it was whispered that Webshots installed spyware onto users’ computers; fortunately, this is not true. You can read Webshot’s “No Spyware/Adware” policy here: http://tinyurl.com/mq6bt.

Go poke around and explore Webshots. If nothing else, you’ll most definitely see a ton of beautiful photography!

Would You Like Some Web With Your Wine?

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks

Happy Saturday everyone! Today I’ve got a somewhat-but-not-completely wine-themed article for you. Let’s get straight to it.

First, for all the wine enthusiasts reading today, I’d like to tell you about Cork’d. Corkd.com is a relatively new site that’s super-functional, pretty, and easy to use (what a perfect combination, eh?). In a nutshell, it was built to offer people a service that makes it simple and easy to review and share wine.

Once you start an account for yourself, you’re free to make your own personal Wine Journal, where you can catalog, rate, and review wines you’ve tried. You can take a look at what your friends and colleagues are drinking, keep track of new wines you’d like to buy, and browse through the reviews given by other Cork’d members.

Heard a wine mentioned recently but know little about it? You can search for wines right from the homepage of corkd.com. Just want to get right to the good stuff? You can see the top-rated wines at the bottom of the homepage. Fun fun fun.

Head over to www.corkd.com and, before signing up (which is easy and free), click on the “About Cork’d” link that appears on the left of the page. You’ll find a fantastic summary of reasons why you should play around on the site-in case I’ve not convinced you.

Perhaps wine just isn’t your thing. Perhaps you already keep a wine journal and know everything there is to know about wine. Perhaps you just have a big bottle of vodka sitting in your cupboard right now and you don’t know what to do with it. Not to fret; for you folks there’s a delightful website called Extra Tasty (www.extratasty.com).

Just like corkd.com, this site is simple, fun, pretty, and super-easy to use. In the mood to try something new? Go to the “My Bar” section, tell Extra Tasty what booze you currently have, and *poof*, you’re given a list of all the mixed drinks you can make with what you’ve got.

Submit your own recipes, view what your friends are drinking and saying, win prizes for having your submission voted “Drink of the Day”, or simply browse through the endless list of mixed drinks until you find something that tickles your fancy. Enjoy (um, responsibly, of course).

I was recently chatting with John Buchanan, the owner of Samplings Wine Bar here Frisco, about various computer issues he’d recently experienced. Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, etc.) and files had been throwing errors, his email program had stopped functioning correctly, files in his “My Documents” folder were not opening up. Nothing he tried made any difference at all. How frustrating!

It turns out that a recent Microsoft Windows update that had automatically downloaded onto his computer (and has probably automatically downloaded onto most of the computers owned by today’s readers!) is incompatible with the majority of Hewlitt-Packard (HP) products. Which products, you ask? All of the following: HP PhotoSmart software, any HP DeskJet printer that includes a card reader, HP Scanners, some HP CD-DVD RWs, and HP Cameras.

Has your computer experienced any of the problems that John’s did? Do you have any HP products on or that connect to your computer? If so, download this file to your Desktop: www.timeforcake.com/help/hp-fix.zip. Then follow these five steps:

  1. Right click hp-fix.zip file and select Extract All.
  2. Follow the wizard to extract the two files to the Desktop.
  3. Double click fix1 and click Yes to confirm.
  4. Double click fix2 and wait for the commands to finish.
  5. Restart your computer.

Upon following these steps, the problematic issues should no longer trouble you. Another small victory over your computer! Time to celebrate. Go ahead and pour yourself a nice glass of wine (or head out to dinner and have someone else pour you a nice glass of wine!). You deserve it.
