Auto Udates: Set ‘Em, Then Forget ‘Em

Posted in: Computer Tips & Tricks

Do all of those technology articles and computer people keep nagging you to keep your computer updated? “Download operating system updates!” they cry. “Visit the Microsoft Updates website regularly” they demand.

Sure. Like you aren’t busy enough; do they actually think you’ll be able to schedule in some time for “computer updating” between your bike ride, making dinner, doing your laundry and running all those errands? Yeah right, you think to yourself.

Thus, the problem remains. Keeping your computer updated is incredibly important, but few people have the time to check for updates on a regular basis.

This is why, dear Windows XP users, today we’ll learn how to ensure your computer has “Automatic Updates” turned on.

Take just one minute to turn on your computer’s Auto Updates, and, as people are fond of saying these days in the world of crockpots, “set it and forget it.”

Are you ready? Are you with me? Then let’s go make sure those Auto Updates are set to ON.

Are you sitting comfortably in front of your computer now? Good. First thing we need to do is locate the little “My Computer” icon on your desktop.

Once you’ve found it, go ahead and right-click on it, then choose “Properties” from the drop-down menu.

A little window with seven or so tabs should have popped open. Click on the tab entitled “Automatic Updates” - this is exactly where we want to be.

Now that we’re here, make sure that the top option, “Automatic,” is selected, then set the time your computer should look for these updates below. (I have my computer check for updates everyday, but once a week should be fine - whatever you prefer.)

Click “OK” when you’re done. (Keep in mind that these updates have nothing to do with your virus protection - that’s a different beast all together.)

When you’re setting the time for your computer to automatically check for updates, remember that your computer must be turned on in order for everything to work!

So make sure you don’t set the Auto Updating to run every day at 3 a.m. if you turn your computer off every night.

The great thing about this process is that your updates are downloaded automatically in the background during the scheduled time - there are no annoying notifications or interruptions during the process.

If you have a dial-up and aren’t always connected to the internet, your computer will wait patiently until the next time you’re connected before it tries to automatically update.

Honestly. That’s all there is to it. Now sit back and have some cake.

Fun Finds

Posted in: Web Info, Tips & Tricks, Website Links

Hi there everyone. This week during my exploration of the web I came across several fun finds: a great game, an immensely useful forum, and an application that can make you feel like an underachiever.

Fun diversion
This kept me quite entertained one day at lunch: http://tinyurl.com/76sym. The game is called “Guess the Google,” and it sure makes you use your brain.

In a nutshell, the game picks a secret keyword and then shows you the top 20 images Google results generated. The faster you guess the secret keyword, the more points you receive.

Guess the Google requires version 7+ of Flash (but don’t worry - if you don’t have it, the page offers a link to the free download). Have fun - but don’t get too addicted.

Accomplishments

The fantastic Museum of Conceptual Art has written a small yet amusing web application aptly titled, “Things Other People Accomplished When They Were Your Age.” Simply type your age into the box, hit the “Display Accomplishments” button, and that’s it.

I discovered that, at my age, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, Ken Kesey published “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” and Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Italy. Man, I’m such a slacker.

See what others your age have accomplished: http://museumofconceptualart.com/accomplished.

Useful forum
I’m not quite sure how I came across this site, but “Forums for the Chaotic Home” is a fun place to talk, share, and ask questions with people who have similar interests.

The site is very low-tech with few graphics, making it incredibly easy to use. Choose from over 100 categories and ask advice, give advice, read others’ comments, post photos, and make new friends.

A very short list of some of the categories on this site include: Building a Home, Flooring, Home Repair, Cooking Outdoors, Beauty and Fashion, Trash to Treasure, Photography, Scrapbooks, Woodworking, The Single Life, Exercise & Nutrition, Parenting, Holidays, and Camping.

Everyone is allowed to read all the site’s content, but to post a comment or reply to a comment, you need to become a member - which costs $15. Take a look; surely there’s a category here you’ll find interesting: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums.

Online Game of the Week

Posted in: Website Links

One of my favorites: Bookworm.

It’s wonderfully simple to play yet totally addicting - especially if you like word games like Scrabble and/or Boggle.

Game instructions don’t get much simpler than this: “Link letters together to make words. Then click submit!” Just remember to keep the red tiles from hitting the bottom or your game is over.

Give Bookworm a shot at http://tinyurl.com/1rf4 - just make sure you’ve set aside plenty of time to play!
