More Fun and Function

Continuing on from the theme of our last column, here are more great items from my master “ideas and notes” list. Take a look; I hope you find something you like.

  • Looking for something fun? Try this: http://tinyurl.com/2jvj8! A Swiss fellow has created animations and movies out of nothing but typed letters and numbers. Click one of his movies, wait a short moment and smile.
  • The other day I came across an article in “Inc.” magazine discussing the future of search on the web, beyond Google. One of the interesting companies it reviewed was California-based Snap, a company planning to take “paid search” to a whole new level.
  • Pay-per-click rates got you down? Not to worry, Snap is planning on launching “Pay-per-action” advertising. That’s right; rather than pay for unique visits to your website (as companies do with Google AdSense) companies will pay only when a specific action is made, such as a sale. The paradigm of paying per completed transaction instead of per site visit is sure to not only cut down on “click-fraud” (when competitors click on your ad simply to make your advertising bill higher), but to permanently restructure the world of paid online advertising altogether.
  • Speaking of pay-per-click fraud, if you feel you’ve been a victim or if you’re simply interested in learning about this widespread problem, you can learn more here: http://tinyurl.com/5k6g2, and here: http://news.com.com/2100-1024_3-5273078.html. There are a variety of programs specializing in detecting and tracking click fraud as well. An example can be found here: http://www.clickdetective.com.
  • No matter how well you take care of your computer, it’s a fact that some of your programs, at some point in time, will crash. Many Windows XP users find it an even bigger pain, though, that after every crash, a window pops open and asks if you want to send information to Microsoft about the crash. If you’d like to stop these post program-crash popups from displaying, follow these steps: 1) Go to Start > Control Panel > System (Some of you may have to first select “Settings” after clicking on the Start button). 2) Select the Advanced Tab, then click on “Error Reporting” 3) Select “Disable Error Reporting” 4) Click OK. And that’s all there is to it.
  • Curious as to what the most popular web search terms were for 2004? Would you have guessed that Janet Jackson was No. 1 and Britney Spears has been bumped down to No. 4? Would it surprise you if I said the IRS was No. 27 and Prom Hairstyles was No. 80? And what reaction would you have if I told you that John Kerry was No. 97 while George W. Bush was No. 81?

Spring Cleaning … In January …

I keep a text document on my computer filled with tips, tricks and interesting information that I use when writing these articles

When the document hit seven pages recently, I realized I need to do some serious maintenance.

So, without further ado, here are some great items from my master idea list. You employ the items that sound helpful, and I’ll get my black marker and tidy up my list.

  • www.jiwire.com: This site, according to Time magazine, has “everything you always wanted to know about Wi-Fi but were afraid to ask!” Find hotspots (such as the Dillon Dam Brewery), learn practical tips, evaluate product reviews.
  • Wi-Fi, for those of you who are scratching your heads right now, is an abbreviation for wireless fidelity - an increasingly popular wireless technology that you can use to surf the Web when you’re out and about or to network your home computers.
  • Did you know: The abbreviations “MB” and “MEG” stand for the same thing - megabyte.
  • Do you ever search for flights online and think, “There’s got to be a cheaper flight than this?” Just for you, I’d like to introduce one of my new favorite travel search engines: Mobissimo. Based in my home town of San Mateo, California, Mobissimo is a great workhorse of a website that searches about 80 other travel websites so that you don’t have to. I’ve found it locates some super-cheap deals.
  • Scam alert: When you hear a company advertise that its website receives “over 500,000 hits per month” - proceed with caution.
  • Advertising a website’s number of hits is often a scam used to trick people into thinking a certain site receives far more traffic than it actually does. What you need to understand is that a website’s popularity is measured by the number of unique visitors, not hits - there is a difference.
  • A “hit” is a single request made to a server for one specific object on your webpage. This object could be a graphic, a sound file, your HTML page itself, etc.
  • Let’s say you have 50 different images on Page A in your website; this means that one unique visit to your page would equal over 50 hits. And if that same visitor then went on to visit Page B, your website could immediately accumulate another 50 hits. Keep this information in mind next time someone brags about the thousands of hits their website receives.
  • Did you know: You see photos and images on the web everyday. Did you know that just about all of them are either JPEG (.jpg) files or GIF (.gif) files?
  • Two cool facts (provided by Office Depot) you probably didn’t know:: (1) On average, each toner cartridge recycled keeps 2.5 pounds of waste out of the trash and saves one-half gallon of petroleum. (2) One 100MB Zip disk can store the contents of a four-drawer filing cabinet; one CD-ROM can hold the equivalent of nearly a roomful of paper. (What a reduction in clutter and paper use!)

I hope you found something useful here today. My list is still cluttered, though … guess this just means more for you next time!
