Website Roundup (Yeeeehaw!)

Posted in: Website Links

Hi there everyone.  It’s time for another website roundup, where I’ll showcase a variety of interesting, wacky, and useful websites from around the World (Wide Web).  Let’s see what’s in store today, shall we?

For all of you interested in seeing a site showcasing unusual talent and for all of you looking for . . . ah . . . “unique gifts”, head over to www.surfwiz.com/paintedrocks.htm.  Mr. George Witham uses his artistic abilities to paint rocks. That’s right, he paints rocks.  He paints rocks to look like sandwiches, fish, race cars, cameras, people, shoes, and seals.  Take a look at his site and you can browse his art, order a piece for yourself or a friend, and learn more about George.

Though still brand new and though it still has several bugs to be worked out, Ask Jeeves has expanded its searching capabilities and now includes a Famous People Search.   Simply click on the “Smart Search ” icon located at Ask Jeeves (www.ask.com) to be taken to a new page where you can use the Famous People Search.

Chris Sherman at SearchEngineWatch describes Ask Jeeve’s Famous People Search in  more detail: “Direct answers for famous people appear in a box at the top of a search result page, with a picture, short biography and additional links for more information. These links vary depending on what the person is famous for. For example, results for David Bowie include links for pictures, news, products, filmography and discography.”  Have fun with this!

As a young, young child in the 1980’s, I played a variety of excellent video games including Duck Hunt, Tetris, Donkey Kong, and Frogger.  You can imagine my delight when I discovered a website that allows you to play these games and several others–on your computer, for free, with no downloading required!  Just click a link and start playing.  This site is simply way cool; you really need to try it out: www.80smusiclyrics.com/games.  You know, I had honestly forgotten how challenging Pacman was.

If you’re a technology gadget freak, I highly recommend visiting Engadget at www.engadet.com for hours and hours of fun.  Learn about the latest cellphones, digital cameras, robots, home entertainment equipment, Bluetooth technology, portable audio equipment, and so much more.  The site is updated several times daily, so you’re sure to get your fill of the latest technology and gadget news.

Hey music lovers!  Do you know about the All Music Guide?  If not, you’re in for a serious treat.  www.allmusic.com is easily one of the most comprehensive and easy-to-use musical resources available to the public on the web.  The site is filled with high-quality information that’s surprisingly difficult to find elsewhere. I use it. I love it. And I bet you’ll be sure to find exactly what you’re looking for within the All Music Guide.

The last site for today is UPromise (www.upromise.com).  This site was developed as a free service to help families save for children’s college educations.  According to site reviews, it’s quite simple and you save money every time you shop for the things you need, whether you’re shopping online or at your favorite local store.

How do they do it?  UPromise deposits discounts from retailers into your college-savings fund.  The site is filled with useful information and I strongly suggest taking a look to determine if their free service is right for you and your future college students.

The world of technology is always growing, expanding, changing, and updating. Big and small companies alike are ceaselessly working to come up with more effective, more efficient, more useful applications and services that will (hopefully) make our lives that much better, easier, or more enjoyable.  But OF COURSE you’re aware of these obvious generalities!

What you may not have already been aware of, my friends, is that two of the leaders in Internet technologies allow us to test out and play with their latest unreleased projects. You can actually use, review, and even comment on technology projects these companies are working on to improve and eventually release for widespread public use.

Who are these big companies?  None other than Microsoft and Google.

MICROSOFT

The Microsoft Network (MSN) has what they call a “sandbox,” located at http://sandbox.msn.com, where you can “play with the new MSN technologies, look at prototypes, and peek behind the scenes” at some of their latest ideas.

As of the beginning of September, 2004, there were a total of six different technologies showcased on MSN’s sandbox site: the Lookout Email Search Tool, Newsbot, the MSN Toolbar (a direct competitor of the glorious Google’s toolbar), 3Â◦, Netscan, and TerraServer/TerraService.

The TerraServer/TerraService tools looked especially intriguing to me. The TerraServer-USA Web site, according to the MSN sandbox page, is “one of the world’s largest online databases, providing free public access to a vast data store of maps and aerial photographs of the United States.”

You can try any one of these experimental projects out for yourself at MSN’s sandbox page.  Take a look and see if any of these six technologies sounds appealing to you.

GOOGLE

Google’s equivalent to MSN’s sandbox is called “Google Labs.”  Located at http://labs.google.com, the Google Labs page showcases what I believe to be some of the most interesting projects and useful up-and-coming technologies around.

At the Google Labs page, you can test out the Froogle Wireless service, which allows you to search for products from your cell phone.  You can download and use Google Compute, which actually donates your computer’s idle time to help scientific research!  Or perhaps the Google Deskbar sounds appealing to you: it gives you the power to search using Google–without opening your browser.

One of my personal favorites offered by Google Labs is the “Web Alerts” technology.  Web Alerts provides you with notifications of new web pages on whatever specific topics of interest you define.  Pretty cool.

Try out MSN’s Sandbox and Google Labs.  Experiment!  Play!  Take a look at some of the technologies of tomorrow!  And of course, remember that this should all be fun.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone.
